Geological Mapping Cell

OFFICE OF THE CHIEF MINING GEOLOGIST :- The Chief Mining Geologist (CMG) is a part of MCCM Division in IBM. IBM has a total of 138 Mining Geologists of gazetted status. The CMG being the functional head of Mining Geology discipline in IBM, also imparts technical guidance and monitoring of all mining geological studies and inspections carried out by the Mining Geologists of IBM.  The CMG office has following  unit working under it.

Geological Map Cell: This cell is a part of the office of the Chief Mining Geologist in IBM and is located at Nagpur. The amended and re-designated Mines and Minerals (Development & Regulation) Act (MM(DR)Act) has introduced the following amendments:
A new concept of reconnaissance operations distinct from previous prospecting operations has been introduced in the amended Act thus limiting the maximum area of 10,000 sq.km for Reconnaissance Permits (RP), 25 sq.km. for the Prospecting Licenses (PL) and 10 sq.km. for Mining Leases (ML).  The Chief Mining Geologist, IBM, has been declared as the nodal agency for acquisition and dissemination of exploration data base generated through RP and PL over large areas.

The CMG also administers Rule 3A & B of MCDR, 88 which involves acquisition of data on PL areas, their verification and dissemination. It imparts guidance on Special Studies / SIS  carried out on specific mining districts and mineral belts of the country focusing on Mineral Conservation, Scientific Mine Development, Environmental Protection and Community Development which are carried out by Mining Geologists of MCCM Division posted in different regional offices.  The office also co-ordinates the preparation and updation of  National Mineral Inventory (NMI) as per UNFC in respect of all the leaseholds in the country. The CMG office also advises on various references cited by the Ministry of Mines, Govt. of India, and other clients, in connection with the reservation of areas for exploration and exploitation of minerals / ores by the central / state agencies under Section 17 A of MM(DR) Act, 1957. Its geologists thus participate in various sub committees of CGPB to oversee and co-ordinate mineral exploration activities in the country. The CMG also participates as nominated member on the standing committee on Promotional Projects for recommending promotional exploration activities of MECL. It also provides technical support to monitor environmental and ecological aspects emanating from mining plans / mining schemes and feasibility reports etc.
