MINERAL MAP CELL
Mineral Map Cell of Indian Bureau of Mines, Nagpur is engaged in preparation of Multi Mineral Leasehold (MML) Maps with corresponding Forest overlays. A total of 839 nos. of MML Maps of ten important minerals bearing states have so far been prepared and available for sale. Such MML maps are being aimed at to provide a comprehensive regional display of distribution of Mining leases in a mineralized belt. Such Multi Mineral Leasehold Maps, prepared on 1:50K scale is available sheet wise, covering an area of 15' X 15' of Survey of India (SOI) toposheet and depict topographic features, infrastructural facilities, means of communication and important township, geological formations, mineral deposits, Mining Leases of major minerals (excluding coal & atomic minerals and minor mineral). For mineral map preparation, the toposheet is scanned using AO colour Scanner. After scanning, the different vector features (such as road, railways, river, spot RL) of toposheets are on the screen digitized in different layers, assigning different symbologies using AutoCad map software. Forest data available as 1o X 1 o of SOI toposheet is sourced from Forest Survey of India (FSI). Forest overlays comprises all lands more than 1 hectare in area, with tree canopy density of more than 10%, irrespective of land use & ownership. Such forest overlays, geo-referenced with corresponding MML map is available as a separate layer. In the MML Map, following broad layers are available: TOPOGRAPHICAL FEATURES: The different features like State boundary, Road, Railways, Drainage pattern, major Rivers & Streams, contours, spot RL and such specific information, location features like Village/Town etc. as shown in Survey of India Toposheet. MINING LEASES: From various technical documents of IBM namely, Mining plan, Scheme of Mining, Mining Geological Study and Mines inspection reports, National mineral inventory, etc. for obtaining Location of Mining lease boundary and extent of lease and information to prepare the mine database. REGIONAL GEOLOGY: Map-wise, cropping of Regional geology with formation index from published geological map of Geological Survey of India. FOREST OVERLAYS shows forest density in three classes viz. Very Dense Forest (canopy density > 70%); Moderately Dense Forest (canopy density: 40-70%); Open Forest (canopy density: 10-40%). Scrub (canopy density less than 10%); Non-Forest areas and Water Bodies are also delineated. No distinction with respect to type of tree cover (natural/man made) or tree species is available on such forest overlays. Since the resolution of LISS-III sensor digital data is 23.5m X 23.5m pixel size, the linear strips of forest cover along roads, canals, bunds and rails of width less than the resolution are not shown in the forest overlays. It may be possible that a part or the whole of such forest area, at any point in time, may not have trees on it but still all the provisions of the forest law under which it is notified will be applicable to it. However, while assessing forest overlays using satellite data, such blanks/gaps has been classified as non-forest by FSI.
